The science magazine Spektrum.de presents the OSF and the EU project OpenwebSearch.eu

The article deals with the question of why Europe urgently needs its own web index to ensure digital sovereignty.
The OSF is part of the OWS.EU project funded by “Horizon Europe”. The aim: to build a prototype of an open web index for Europe.

“So far, 1.3 billion URLs in 185 languages, a total of 60 terabytes, have been crawled and indexed,” says OWS.EU project manager Michael Granitzer from the University of Passau.

In the future, different types of search engines could be based on the index, e.g. vertical search engines that focus on specific topics or an argument search that can provide advantages and disadvantages for certain search queries.

Training AI applications on indexed data is also an option.
