Identify search-based use-cases
The Applications Working Group aims to identify search-based applications for the broader community, either based on or to enrich an open search index. Additionally, the working group focuses on defining application requirements and working on prototype applications. The Applictions working group collaborates closely with all other working group of the Open Search Foundation and reaches out to end-users and other stakeholders.
Working Group Awareness
Raising problem awareness
Why do we need more diversity and transparency in in internet search? How do we protect our data? Which search engines are recommendable? How can we can we teach children and young people skills in internet searching from the very beginning? We put the topic of open internet search on the public agenda and the school timetables.
Working Group Economy
Identifying the economic value
Working Group Ethics
Ethical guard rails
Internet search should serve people, not the other way around. We are convinced that internet search needs ethical boundaries and guidelines in addition to legal-regulatory ones, just like AI. And that the search engines of the future can become better and more innovative through „ethics from the start“, through values like trustworthiness and transparency.
Working Group Legal
Legal Design requirements
A fundamental challenge of the creation of an open web index lies in the establishment of an element of web infrastructure that truly accentuates European (constitutional) values in the best way possible. Furthermore, numerous aspects from sub-constitutional law need to be taken into consideration to prevent a lack of compliance with legal requirements. These range from data protection law to intellectual property rights.
Working Group Tech
Technology as a building block
The DNA of the Open Search Foundation lies in this technical group, which formed back in May 2018 to conduct initial experiments on distributed crawling. The work is done in a vibrant open source community and in cooperation with data centers and institutions across Europe.
